Four people in hospital after fire rips through Glasgow tenement block on Bathgate Street

Several people have been taken to hospital after a tenement block in Glasgow’s east end caught fire.

Fire crews were called to a “well alight” building on Bathgate Street at around 1.22pm on Monday.

SFRS said that three male and one female casualty were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary by ambulance for precautionary checks.

Another three people were checked over and discharged at the scene.

The fire service said the blaze has been extinguished, however two fire crews remain at the scene to make the area safe.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 1.22pm on Monday, July 17 to reports of a building fire on Bathgate Street, Glasgow.

“Operations Control immediately mobilised four fire appliances to the scene and firefighters were met with a building well alight.

“Three male and one female casualty were handed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and taken to Glasgow Infirmary for precautionary checks and a further three casualties were discharged on scene.

“The fire has been extinguished however two fire appliances remain in attendance whilst firefighters work to make the area safe”.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.35pm on Monday, 17 July, 2023, we were called to a report of a fire at a property on Bathgate Street, Glasgow.

“Three people were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary as a precaution, three people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

“Emergency services are at the scene and enquiries are ongoing.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service has been approached for comment.
