Four Ugandan boxers 'missing' in Scotland after Commonwealth Games

Four Ugandan boxers, and a Pakistani boxer, are reportedly missing in Scotland following the Commonwealth Games.

According to Pakistani news outlet Geo News, boxer Qudrat Ullah was last seen in his hotel room six hours before he was due to meet his teammates and head home.

The team manager is reportedly in possession of his passport and return ticket.

It’s after Ugandan sports website NBS Sports reported athletes Angel Katushabe, Nuhu Batte, Ibrahim Khemis and Emily Nakalema failed to join the rest of the team and return home.

They were part of the boxing team participating at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 2026 Games came to a close on Sunday, after 11 days of sporting events in the city.

It’s not the first time Ugandan athletes have disappeared during international competition.

Several athletes failed to return following the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

While two Ugandan rugby sevens players, Benon Kizza and Philip Pariyo, also went missing after Glasgow 2014.

They claimed asylum and moved to Cardiff.

The Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda is expected to issue further updates.

Police Scotland has confirmed it has received reports of athletes unaccounted for and enquiries are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police Scotland has received reports of several athletes who are unaccounted for.

“Enquiries are ongoing to assess the circumstances, and early engagement is taking place with the Home Office.”

The Home Office says it takes all necessary steps to prevent people who could abuse the immigration system from entering the UK, but does not comment on individual cases.

That includes enhanced checks on people who enter the UK for major events.

Commonwealth Games chief executive Phil Batty said: “We’ve welcomed nearly 3,000 athletes to the city from 74 nations.

“We want to deliver a safe and secure games, so we work really closely with Police Scotland, the Border Force, and UK visas and immigration to make sure everyone arrives and departs in line with regulation.”
