A fox cub spent nearly two days with a plastic bottle trapped around its neck before being rescued.
The cub was spotted on June 27 with a bottle wrapped around its neck, and Scottish SPCA animal welfare officers were sent to help.
An extended search was launched after the fox ran into its den during efforts to catch it.
After several unsuccessful attempts the next day, he emerged from the undergrowth with the bottle still trapped around his head.
He was initially taken to the University of Glasgow’s Small Animal Hospital, where the wound was cleaned and the fox given pain relief.
The cub has since been transported to the Scottish SPCA’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre at Fishcross and has been under close observation and has been receiving daily treatment for his wound.
Scottish SPCA via SuppliedThe SSPCA is now urging the public to properly dispose of their litter to avoid injuries to wild animals.
The charity’s animal rescue officer said: “This fox was incredibly fortunate. Had we not managed to catch him, the injuries caused by the bottle could have become life-threatening.
“Sadly, this isn’t an isolated incident.
“Every year, we see wild animals injured, trapped or killed by discarded litter. Something as simple as taking your rubbish home or disposing of it properly can prevent animals suffering in this way.
“The charity is urging people to dispose of litter responsibly to help prevent avoidable suffering for wild animals.”
