A fundraiser has been launched to repair dozens of graves vandalised at a cemetery in East Renfrewshire.
St Conval’s cemetery in Barrhead was targeted in the early hours of Saturday, with around 40 headstones damaged and a large crucifix set alight.
The Diocese of Paisley has now launched an appeal for donations and said it would contribute an initial sum of £15,000.
The money raised will be distributed between the families affected and used to refurbish the damaged crucifix.
A 39-year-old man has appeared in court charged with wilful fire-raising, malicious mischief, and being in possession of an offensive weapon in connection with the incident.
Grzegorz Strzelecki, of no fixed address, made no plea and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear before the court in the next eight days.
A spokesperson for the Diocese of Paisley said: “We are incredibly grateful for the support and generosity of those who have set up online funds and to those who have donated.
“Such external funds, however, mean that the Diocese, which is a registered charity, cannot claim the tax back through gift aid, which can add as much as an additional 25% to any donation.
“It would be greatly appreciated if any donations were made to our charities fund St Convals Cemetery Vandalism Fund.
“We would also ask anyone who has set up an online fund or raised money in any other way to consider donating these amounts to the diocesan fund.
“The Diocese is extremely grateful to everyone who has offered support and generosity at this difficult time for all the families affected.”
