A gang of youths racially abused and physically assaulted a woman wearing a hijab in a Glasgow street on Monday afternoon.

The attack took place near Ibrox subway station at around 1.30pm.

Police Scotland said it was following positive lines of enquiry after the incident that anti-Islamaphobia campaigners have branded “abhorrent”.

Iman Atta OBE, director of Tell MAMA (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks), urged the public to report Islamophobia to the charity and police.

“This is an abhorrent attack on a visible Muslim woman by young people where she was assaulted,” he told STV News.

“Such behaviour and actions are totally unacceptable in society and what goes on in the minds of people that they attack an elderly woman just because she is Muslim?

“It demonstrates a moral rot in their minds and there are some serious questions that need to be asked as to how these young men thought it was ok to attack this woman.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Tuesday, January 11, 2022, police received a report that a woman had been assaulted and verbally racially abused near to Ibrox subway station, Ibrox, Glasgow, around 1.30 pm on Monday, January 10, 2022.

“The woman did not require any medical attention. Enquiries are ongoing into the incident.”
