A Glasgow bathroom business is facing an angry backlash after displaying a large inflatable of Michael Myers holding a knife with the words: ‘We murder all competitor’s prices’.
Big Duck Bathrooms in Dennistoun was slammed by councillor Anthony Carroll over the “insensitive” stunt, which comes just days after the alleged murder of Amen Teklay, 15, on Wednesday in St George’s Cross.
Owner Cornelius Kelly said he had pulled the inflatable down this morning after being contacted by the LDRS and said he never thought it would “offend someone,” adding that he wasn’t aware of the recent death.
The blow-up shows the character from the slasher film Halloween gripping a blood-dripped knife.
Bailie Anthony Carroll was contacted by annoyed residents this morning about the gaffe promoting the business – formerly called Connie’s Bathrooms. The inflatable was spotted tied to a yellow trailer on a traffic island at a junction at Cumbernauld Road and Todd Street.
The bathroom firm recently also caused a stir when a giant rubber duck which had been used to promote the business burst leaving polystyrene balls strewn across streets during Storm Eowyn.
Scottish Greens Councillor Carroll said: “To put up a massive serial killer inflatable for no good reason feels so insensitive. It is in such bad taste. It should not be up after an alleged murder took place in the city. It is at the cost of local integrity. The displays have become increasingly audacious.
“Folk locally have emailed me about it.”
The Dennistoun local politician has reported the incident to Glasgow City Council’s planning enforcement team.
Mr Kelly said: “If it (the display) has offended anyone I will take it down. I wouldn’t upset anyone who has lost anyone. It is just advertising.”
He added after taking down the inflatable: “I wasn’t aware of the recent death of a teenager in the other end of the city. I never thought for one moment the advert would offend someone. I have now removed it.”
Mr Kelly passed on his sympathy to anyone who has “lost someone due to violence.”
