A busy road in Glasgow city centre has been closed after a large sinkhole appeared following heavy rainfall.
The sinkhole opened up on Elmbank Street, near its junction with St Vincent Street, prompting an emergency response from Scottish Water to repair a damaged sewer beneath the carriageway.
A spokesperson for Scottish Water said: “Unfortunately, a full road closure is required on safety grounds.
At this stage, we can’t say how long any repair will take, but we will do all that we can to complete all necessary work as quickly as possible.
“There will inevitably be some disruption, but we would like to thank anyone affected for their patience and understanding.”
The affected area has been fenced off and made safe while engineers prepare to carry out a detailed survey of the sewer.
Local businesses in the area remain open, and motorists are being urged to follow diversion signs and allow extra time for their journeys while the repairs are underway.
