'We're cleaning the city all the time' insists Glasgow council leader

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken has refuted claims a major focus of the budget should be on a city deep clean.

The leader of Glasgow City Council has said the city is “constantly” being cleaned amid calls for the new budget to focus on a deep clean.

Susan Aitken has refuted claims a major focus of the budget should be on a Glasgow deep clean, insisting “we are constantly cleaning the city”.

When asked if the current budget would include investment in a deep clean, she said: “We clean all the time. We are constantly cleaning the city.”

“We have people every single day, and we have deep-clean teams across the city picking up leaves and litter and dealing with some of those ongoing challenges,” she said.

“What we would like is more of those people.”

She added the council is looking after the environment “as best as we can”.

Aiken added that a “minority of Glaswegians” don’t respect the environment by dropping litter and fly-tipping.

“That is a drain on public services,” she said.

It comes as the city is set to launch a year of celebrations to commemorate its 850th birthday.

A programme of events and activities is set to take place across 2025 to mark the anniversary of the city’s gain of Burgh status in 1175.
