Glasgow fiddler fulfils ‘childhood dream’ after last-minute call to perform alongside The Corrs at OVO HydroElla Germein

A Glasgow violinist performed alongside her musical heroes after she was asked to step in for a member of iconic Irish family band The Corrs at the last minute.

The group were set to perform their only Scottish gig at the OVO Hydro on Sunday when violinist Sharon Corr had to pull out due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

Thankfully Éadaoin Ní Mhaicín, a Glasgow fiddler originally from Ireland, was able to step in. The 29-year-old was about to teach at a workshop in Edinburgh when she received a call from Irish music legend Sharon Shannon asking if she was free later that day.

Éadaoin was then phoned by the BRIT Award-winning band, comprised of siblings Andrea, Caroline and Jim, who asked if she could take to the stage. The former primary school teacher believes the quick turnaround meant she didn’t have time to let the momentous moment sink in.

She told STV News: “We all get nervous but I didn’t have time to be.

“I just got stuck straight into. I tried the best I could and I remember sitting backstage listening to the music to pick up melodies.

“There was no time to be nervous. I think if I’d found out the day before I would be.

“They didn’t put any pressure on me whatsoever. They were so welcoming and kind. That made the process a lot easier.”

Éadaoin has performed in front of crowds before, performing at the 3Arena in Dublin and on tour with Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance.

However, after the “once in a life-time experience” came to an end, the fiddler became overwhelmed with emotion.

She quickly called her proud parents back in County Mayo after stepping off stage.

The musician said: “At the end I could feel myself welling up.

The violinist says she will always Ella Germein

“It was so surreal. I took in every minute, I didn’t want to spend the gig just worrying and stressed.

“This doesn’t happen everyday. They were very supportive on stage.

“I don’t think it will ever sink in. “

The Irishwoman believes playing beloved songs such as Breathless and Runaway with The Corrs was an unforgettable experience.

She added: “Every Irish person would’ve listened to The Corrs.

“You never think you’d be playing some of their iconic tunes. I think I will always cherish it.

“This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. They say never meet your heroes but The Corrs are absolute legends.”
