A Glasgow sawmill has been saved from demolition after a campaign to block developers’ plans, despite the site housing a sex club.

Plans to turn the old City Sawmill in Port Dundas into flats were blocked by Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and local MSP Paul Sweeney.

The sawmill has been used as a location for CJ’s, which has been described as an adult club with dungeons and playrooms.

Labour MSP Sweeney said he was shocked to learn the site housed a sex club.

He says his motive for joining calls to save the site was to protect its “rich architectural history”.

There’s hope that the building could be repurposed as an arts centre in the future.

In 2022, building owners Weiss Development Company Ltd applied to demolish the site to build around 60 flats.

Sweeney joined objections to the proposal, and Glasgow City Council issued a preservation order on the building.

The Architectural Heritage Society for Scotland (AHSS) also objected to the demolition.

It was later granted C-listed status by HES.

In 2023, the body described the former office block as “a good surviving example of a late 19th-century industrial office building”.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “No approval has been given to proceed with the proposal to build 60 flats on this site.

“The applicant in this case failed to submit a crucial report legally required by the planning process and we have therefore declined to consider the application.”
