Glasgow train services have been cancelled after waves crashed over the sea wall defences in Saltcoats, affecting the overhead lines.
Network Rail posted a video on social media of water smashing over the barrier onto the nearby Glasgow Central to Largs/Ardrossan route on Wednesday.
Services were withdrawn between Kilwinning and Largs/Ardrossan until conditions improve.
As of 1 pm on Wednesday, ScotRail stated that train services were returning to normal following the “severe” weather at Saltcoats in the morning, and confirmed that all lines had reopened.
ScotRail said services between Glasgow Central and Largs/Ardrossan had also returned to normal.
When water comes into contact with the overhead line equipment, it can cause the power to trip. In the current conditions, Network Rail believes the power would trip repeatedly.
The incident would risk damage to the train and possibly result in services being stranded.
ScotRail urged passengers to take alternative train routes.
