Glasgow's annual Bonfire Night fireworks display cancelled

The annual Bonfire Night fireworks display at Glasgow Green has been cancelled for COP26.

As the city prepares to welcome thousands for the UN Climate Summit at the end of October, Glasgow Life said it had chosen not to go forward with the yearly light display.

COP26, due to start on October 31, will be running at the same time as Glasgow’s usual Bonfire Night celebrations and the organiser said it takes several days’ work to prepare and clean up the park.

Last year’s display was called off due to the coronavirus pandemic, and although the event for up to 50,000 people was set to return in 2021 it has now been cancelled so Glasgow Green can remain open to visitors.

A statement from Glasgow Life said: “We will be confirming plans for events this winter in the coming weeks which will provide more reasons to plan a visit to Glasgow and support businesses based in the city.

“Glasgow will be hosting COP26 at the same time as we would normally be hosting a fireworks event for up to 50,000 people.

“Preparing and then clearing Glasgow Green for this event takes several days and so that Glasgow Green remains available to people in early November we will not be hosting Glasgow Fireworks this year.

“Instead our focus is on delivering a winter programme over several weeks which will build on the successes of 2020 which will help boost Glasgow’s economic recovery from the pandemic. We look forward to announcing more details soon.”
