Gran plans Hawaii trip after ‘dream’ £100,000 lottery win

A grandmother from Glasgow is planning to celebrate her £100,000 lottery win with a trip to Hawaii and “a couple” of drinks.

Mary McAnish, 67, found out she won the six-figure sum as her postcode, G31 2RD, was selected for a prize by the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The retired administrator had her cheque presented in a video call by the lottery’s ambassador Judie McCourt.

The moment showed Ms McAnish gasping in shock as the cheque is revealed.

She said: “You are kidding me? Oh my god! Really?! I’m absolutely shocked.

“I’ve never won anything in my life! I’m shaking like anything

“I keep on thinking it’s dream! I don’t know what to do with myself. I’m just walking about the flat. If I wasn’t sitting down, I would probably fall down.”

With some big family birthdays coming up, she plans to treat everyone to a party to celebrate once the coronavirus lockdown is over.

She said: “You’ve no idea what it means. My daughter, Laura, just turned 30 this month, so when this lockdown is all done with I can give her a super-duper party. When I told her I’d won she didn’t believe me at first.

“My husband, Denis, turns 80 next month and my son in law’s grandmother, Helen, turns 90 too. So there are a lot of big birthdays coming up! We will decide where to go with all of us and have a big celebration.”

Ms McAnish also plans to put some money aside for her ten-year-old grandson and take a trip abroad when she can.

She said: “My grandson, Warren, already has a bank account set up for when he turns 18 so I’ll put a lump sum in there for him. He’s a very clever young boy so I’m sure he will go far.

“I’ve also always wanted to go to Hawaii. I love the programme Hawaii Five-0 so I’d love to go and see it in real life.”

When asked what the first thing she will buy with her winnings would be she said: “A bottle of champagne.

“I’ll have a glass of wine with my meal tonight to celebrate, maybe even a couple.”

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Judie McCourt said: “I’m thrilled for Mary.

“Whilst I was unable to visit her in person, it was fab to see her reaction over video. It sounds like she has some great plans to spend her winnings on when she can.”
