Two Great Scottish Run events set to take place this weekend have been cancelled as Storm Amy is set to batter Scotland with strong winds and heavy rain.

The Junior and Mini Great Scottish Run events, which were due to take place in Glasgow on Saturday, have been cancelled.

“The forecasted winds and gusts compromise our event infrastructure including our medical facilities. This combined with potential debris mean that we can’t guarantee the safe delivery of the event. Safety of our participants, staff and volunteers is our number one priority,” a spokesperson for the event said.

The 10k and Half Marathon events are still scheduled to go ahead on Sunday.

It comes as the first named storm of the season is set to hit Scotland on Friday, with three Met Office warnings coming into force.

An amber warning for wind has been issued for parts of the country on Friday and Saturday alongside yellow warnings for rain and wind across both days.

Forecasters warned that heavy rain and gusts of up to 100mph could occur in the north-west of the country.

Event organisers said all participants have been sent an email with details about how they can roll their entry over into next year’s event or claim a refund.

The spokesperson added: “We haven’t taken this decision lightly and have been liaising closely with the Met Office, medical and safety teams, local authorities and key stakeholders throughout the week to make the best-informed decision.

“We know how disappointing this is, and we hope you can understand why this decision has been made.

“We know how much this event means to our runners, We’re therefore going to send the event medal to all Junior, Mini and Toddler Dash participants via post – we’ll get these delivered as soon as we can but please allow a couple of weeks.”
