An investigation has been launched after a group of motorcyclists were targeted and attacked on the M74.

Police were called to the incident involving the motorcyclists and people in four vehicles between junctions 10 and 11 of the motorway, near Lesmahagow, at around 1pm on Sunday.

A 63-year-old man was seriously injured and taken to hospital while “many others” were left shaken.

A red Mazda, with a smashed rear window, believed to have been involved in the incident, was later recovered in the Ayrshire area.

The other vehicles involved are yet to be traced.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

Detective sergeant Craig Wait said: “We believe this was a targeted attack on the group of motorcyclists and it’s vital we trace the people responsible.

“One man has been seriously injured as a result of the attack and many others, including members of the public who witnessed what happened, have been left shaken.

“I’m appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

“Were you on the M74 near Lesmahagow yesterday and saw what happened? Did you see the motorcyclists or vehicles before the incident or the red Mazda and other vehicles leaving the scene? Do you have dash-cam footage which has captured anything of significance? If you do, please get in touch.”
