Several homes have been evacuated and a road has been closed in North Lanarkshire after reports of a gas leak.

Officers have shut the A80 at its junction with Cumbernauld Road and Knowe Road in Chryston.

This is due to an ongoing gas leak at a property.

SGN confirmed this is due to a fire damaging a gas service pipe.

Several properties are being evacuated as a precaution and the public is being asked to avoid the area.

A SGN spokesperson said: “We were called to support the emergency services in Chryston after a fire damaged a gas service pipe.

“Our engineers have isolated the gas supply to four properties for safety, and we’re working to make the required repairs.

“The emergency services evacuated nearby properties as a precaution until it’s safe to return.”
