A Fatal Accident Inquiry into the death of a murderer at an East Dunbartonshire prison is due to begin.

Mark Connor was jailed alongside his accomplice, Stewart Muircroft, after they beat Allan West to death at his Grangemouth home with a variety of household items, including a hoover and two TVs, in August 2022.

Following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow in 2024, Lord Arthurson issued a life sentence to the pair, with a minimum of 20 years to be served behind bars.

Connor, who was a prisoner at HMP Low Moss, died in hospital on March 21 last year, less than a year after he was sentenced.

Every death in custody is subject to a Fatal Accident Inquiry. A Preliminary Hearing into Connor’s death is set to be held at Glasgow Sheriff Court on June 1.

Lorraine Almond of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, Scotland’s death investigation authority, said: “The Lord Advocate considers that the death of Mark Connor occurred whilst he was in legal custody and as such a Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory.

“The lodging of the First Notice enables FAI proceedings to commence under the direction of the Sheriff.”
