Inspectors raise ‘significant concerns’ about after-school care club in Uddingston following inspectioniStock

An after-school club in South Lanarkshire has been told it must urgently improve the care it is providing to children following an inspection.

The Care Inspectorate has raised ‘significant concerns’ about Happy Days Out of School Care, which is operated from a charity-owned building in Uddingston.

STV News understands the charity, VIP Community Project, is not linked to the after-school club.

Happy Days has now been given various deadlines over the month of February to improve – with a warning that the site’s registration will be cancelled if changes aren’t made.

Additionally, management have been asked to undertake training to ensure children are safe whilst being cared for in the service.

The report also states that the welfare of all children when escorted to the service must also be ensured, and there must be suitably recruited individuals working within the care service to meet the safety, health and wellbeing needs of the children at all times.

The service must prove all staff escorting children are PVG checked and that the vehicles being used are roadworthy.

Finally, the centre have to demonstrate that all children’s medication and health needs are considered and planned for.

The Care Inspectorate makes a judgement on the quality of care being provided by speaking to staff, management and parents, observing ‘practice and daily life’ and reviewing documents.

A spokesperson said: “We understand this is a difficult and distressing time for children who attend the service, their families and staff at the service.

“However, our first priority is always the health and wellbeing of children.

“We are in contact with and monitoring the service to follow up on the required improvements.

“If we are not satisfied that sustained improvement has been made we will not hesitate to take further action.

“Anyone with a concern about a service can contact us on 0345 600 9527.”

Happy Days Out of School Care has been contacted for comment.
