Islay Dog Rescue raises £6,000 to help treat 13 dogs found in 'horrendous' condition in East Ayrshire

A fundraiser has been set up to help more than a dozen dogs in a “horrifying” condition after being taken into a rescue centre.

Islay Dog Rescue near Cumnock in Ayrshire has launched an appeal to raise funds after 13 dogs were taken into their care with the fear some “might not make it” due to their condition.

Some of the longer-haired dogs have “horrendous mats” and others will require anaesthesia for further removal of hair with vet appointments under way, say volunteers.

A fundraiser set up by the centre, which specialises in saving animals from dog pounds, specifically “death row shelters”, has raised £6,000 within one day of being live.

A post from the centre on Facebook read: “A few days ago I was asked to help 13 dogs who were in a poor situation. I immediately agreed.

“These dogs are in a horrifying condition. Some may not make it.

“The long haired dogs have the most horrendous mats you can begin to imagine. We have had a groomer here who donated a day’s time. He carried out welfare grooms the best he could.

“A couple of the dogs will need anaesthesia to allow the remainder of the mats to be removed. Vet appointments are under way.

“The kennel staff and senior volunteers are immense. I could not be prouder of them. They are working so hard and their compassion is humbling.

“Four dogs are in foster with very experienced rescuers, they are in safe hands.

“This will cost a fortune, let’s not be shy about it.
