Police ScotlandA man has been jailed for life after being convicted of murdering his disabled victim in his own home with a hammer.
Stephen Thomson, 26, was given a life sentence with a minimum of 20 years at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday after previously being found guilty.
Thomson attacked Peter Morgan, 60, at the flat in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, on November 19, 2021 and repeatedly struck him with a hammer.
Police ScotlandEmergency services attended and Mr Morgan was found seriously injured within.
He was taken to hospital where he died a few days later.
The judge, Lord Young, described it as a “savage attack”.
During the trial, the jury heard how Thomson appeared to laugh when arrested and claimed: “What is going on anyway? I was at my mate’s house.”
Detective sergeant Mark Nelson said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Morgan at this difficult time for them. I hope the fact Thomson has now been sentenced will provide some kind of closure.
“I would like to thank the public for their assistance while our investigation was carried out.”
