Supermarket chain Lidl is set to buy council-owned land next to its Springburn store in a deal worth £300,000.

Officials said Lidl Great Britain Ltd approached the council about buying the ground to include in its “proposed demolition and redevelopment of the existing unit”.

The firm secured permission to knock down the existing supermarket and build a larger replacement on land near it in 2015.

However, a council report adds that it does not appear to have been implemented.

Glasgow councillors will be asked to back the sale of a strip of grass and trees at the St Rollox business and retail park when the contracts and property committee meets on Thursday.

The report states that the 0.57-acre site provides “perimeter screening and landscaping” for the Lidl from Springburn Road. It was declared surplus to the council’s requirements in November last year.

At a meeting in January, councillors approved the start of talks over the terms and conditions of a potential deal with Lidl.

These have now been negotiated by the council’s arms-length firm, City Property, and would have a purchase price of £300,000.

In April, Lidl GB announced plans to invest half a billion pounds in its expansion, including opening more than 40 new stores nationwide this financial year.

Areas listed as “store relocation required” in the firm’s site requirements brochure for 2025 included Glasgow – Springburn. It also listed Baillieston, Crookston and Govan.

Possible locations for new stores in the city included Cathcart, Drumchapel, Ibrox, Merchant City and Summerston.

Lidl says the sites in the brochure indicate areas of interest that would be desirable for new stores.
