A lorry driver who crashed into a railway bridge was fined £640.

Charles Stewart, 54, struck the bridge in Glasgow’s Carntyne on March 29, 2024.

The collision caused travel chaos as the major train line which the bridge covers was shut down.

Stewart, of Carntyne, also ended up in hospital with a serious chest injury.

Stewart pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to careless driving.

The court heard Stewart was behind the wheel of an 18-tonne lorry at 8.45am.

Prosecutor Chloe Lacey said: “He was driving at 15 miles per hour and he passed a road sign which said the limit for vehicles travelling [under the bridge] was 3.9 metres.

“The lorry continued to drive towards the railway bridge without due care and attention which caused him to strike it.”

Police were called and Stewart was taken to hospital for treatment.

Kevin Corr, defending, told the sentencing that the circumstances were “unusual.”

The lawyer added: “He had been driving this skip lorry for a number of months in advance of this.

“He went under the bridge before with no difficulty – he had passed under the bridge that morning.

“It was him coming back when he struck the bridge which caused the accident and the serious chest injury.

“This was a mistake and a costly mistake.”

Sheriff Collette Gallagher imposed four penalty points as well as the fine
