An M8 slip road has reopened after sewage from a burst pipe flooded a section of the motorway, causing disruption to drivers and a stench around Braehead Shopping Centre.

Traffic Scotland said that lane two of the motorway’s westbound carriageway on-slip at Junction 25A, Braehead Interchange, was shut from 8.30am on Friday.

Scottish Water operatives were on the scene to clean up the contaminated water after a sewer main burst.

The lanes have since reopened, with Scottish Water now planning repair work for the burst main in liaison with Amey Highways.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Scottish Water used all resources available to complete this work and enable the road to be reopened as quickly as possible in order to help alleviate traffic congestion in the area.

“The burst beside the slip road that leads from the westbound M8 towards the Braehead area and shopping centre caused some localised flooding of the road and surrounding area.

“Scottish Water liaised with Amey Highways as its work progressed.

“The utility, which is now planning repair work for the burst main in liaison with Amey, apologises for the inconvenience and disruption to road users and thanks them for their patience and understanding during this incident.”

A SEPA spokesperson said: “We have been notified of potential sewage on the M8 near Glasgow. We have been in touch Scottish Water, who are dealing with the incident.

“While this is unlikely to result in any impact on the water environment, we will continue to liaise with them until the incident is resolved. We expect an Environmental Pollution Incident report to be submitted in due course and will follow up with any regulatory actions if required.”
