Major disruption to trains to continue into Saturday due to 'infrastructure damage'

There is major disruption to train services in the west of Scotland after overhead wires were badly damaged on Friday.

There has been “significant damage to infrastructure” on the West Coast Main Line near Newton which is impacting services to and from Glasgow Central.

A response team has been dispatched to the area. Network Rail said the problems wouldn’t be fixed until at least Saturday morning.

“With significant repairs to the overhead wires needed at Newton, and engineers still inspecting other areas between Bellshill and Cambuslang, we expect this disruption here to continue until at least tomorrow morning,” a Network Rail spokesperson said.

Passengers due to travel on services between Glasgow and England were asked to check with their train operators before leaving.

Trains running between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central via Shotts may be cancelled, delayed or revised due to the issue.

ScotRail said: “Due to damage to the overhead electric wires between Bellshill and Newton Lanark disruption is expected until 12.15pm.

“Train services between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central via Shotts may be cancelled, delayed or revised.”

Network Rail said: “We’re experiencing a loss of power to the overhead wires near Newton, which is affecting services in this area, including the West Coast Main Line.

“A response team has been dispatched to investigate the cause.”
