A man has appeared in court accused of endangering life, stalking, assault and drug possession after the discovery of potentially hazardous chemicals in a flat.

On Monday, Police Scotland were called to a property on Altyre Street in Tollcross, in the city’s east end, at around 5pm on Monday where dozens of homes were evacuated and eight officers fell ill.

On Wednesday, the force said a 34-year-old man had been charged in connection with domestic offences.

Darren Querns, of Glasgow, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Thursday charged with assault to injury, threatening or abusive behaviour, stalking, possession of controlled drugs, and culpable and reckless conduct to the danger of life.

Querns made no plea and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear at court again within eight days.

An Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team was called to the scene as police tried to determine the nature of the materials.

Seven police and a SPA forensics officer fell ill after attending the property on Monday. They received treatment at the scene and have since recovered.

Around 100 residents from dozens of homes were evacuated and given emergency accommodation at the nearby Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

The property sits just next to Wellshot Primary School.

Detective Inspector Gary Smillie previously said: “Our enquiries into the incident are ongoing, and there will be a continued police presence in the area. We continue to work closely with our partners.

“I would like to thank local residents for their patience and co-operation while we continue to deal with this incident.”
