A man has appeared in court charged with setting fire to a church.

Ryan Haggerty, 25, has been accused of wilfully setting fire to St Simon’s Church in Glasgow’s Partick on July 28 this year.

Prosecutors state the fire took effect and as a result “structural damage was caused”.

The buildings adjacent to the church were also said to have been evacuated.

The charge claims this included the residential property attached to it, occupied at the time of the fire by 79-year-old Mary Ross.

Ms Ross is stated to belong to the Order of Notre Dame.

The fire was allegedly to the danger of Ms Ross’ life.

Haggerty made no plea at a private hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

He was remanded in custody pending further examination by Sheriff Shona Gilroy.

Haggerty, of the city’s Kelvinhall, will appear in court again within the next eight days.
