Man approaches children and 'offers sweets' during morning school run

A man allegedly approached two schoolgirls outside a Glasgow primary school early on Wednesday morning and “offered them sweets”.

Police were altered after the incident on Seamill Street outside of St Bernard’s Primary school in the Nitshill area of the city.

STV News understands the individual, who was dressed in black and grey clothing and a dark hat, offered the girls sweets – but did not attempt to remove the youngsters or make physical contact with them.

Local schools in the area have been made aware of the alleged incident – with so-called “stranger danger” advice being issued to pupils.

A letter from St Brenard’s headteacher Elaine MacEachen to concerned parents said: “It is important that we all continue to be vigilant in the school community but remain calm while we let the police do their job.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. We have also alerted all local schools.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a man approaching two children on Seamill Street in Glasgow around 8.55am on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: “We know that this incident will be alarming for families and can reassure them that the safety of their children is our primary focus here.”

“The school will keep everyone updated with any information as we let the police do their job.”
