Man arrested after two pensioners die in car collision

One man aged 73 was pronounced dead at the scene while another 80-year-old man later died in hospital as a result of the crash.

Two pensioners have died and a man has been arrested after a road crash in Rutherglen.

Police were called to the scene of the collision on Mill Street around 11.50pm on Friday.

A 73-year-old male passenger of a Mercedes C220 was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 80-year-old passenger of the same car was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he later died.

The crash took place involving the Mercedes and a Ford Mondeo at the junction with King’s Park Avenue.

Officers confirmed that the 34-year-old driver of the Ford Mondeo was not injured and has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The road remains closed while emergency services carried out investigations at the scene.

Sergeant Gemma Blackadder said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who died as a result of this incident.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time of the crash and who may have witnessed it or have dash cam footage to contact us.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 4274 of November 18.”
