A man has been arrested in connection with the rape of a woman on a Glasgow street close to the River Clyde.

Emergency crews were called to a report of a serious sexual assault in the Warroch Street area at around 10.45pm on Wednesday.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection as enquires remain ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault in the Warroch Street area of Glasgow.

“The incident occurred around 10.45pm on Wednesday, July 8. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Four rapes reported in under six weeks

Wednesday’s incident is one of four other alleged serious sexual assaults around the city in recent weeks, three of which have occurred around the Broomielaw area.

On May 31, a woman was allegedly raped in an alleyway near Clyde Place. Two men, 19 and 20, were arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

On June 16, a teenager was allegedly raped under a motorway ramp at Anderston near Cheapside Street.

Officers arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with the attack, who was released pending further enquiries.

On June 26, a 16-year-old was allegedly raped in Springburn park. A 36-year-old man has been charged and remains in custody.

Superintendent Jackie Dunbar has assured the public that officers will be carrying out patrols around Glasgow following the alleged sex crimes.

“Police Scotland takes all reports of sexual crime seriously and has dedicated teams to carry out thorough investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice”, she said.

“We understand incidents of this nature can cause a great deal of concern to the public and our officers continue to carry out regular patrols to provide reassurance.

“We would urge anyone who has been the victim of sexual crime to please come forward and report it. Our specialist officers are here to listen and support you throughout, alongside our partner agencies.

“If you have information or concerns, you can speak to Police Scotland on 101, or approach any of our officers out on patrol.”

The incidents have led officers to respond to protests focused on registered sex offenders and people thought to be sex offenders across the city.

Police said on Friday that a case of mistaken identity led to the home of an innocent person being targeted by a protest in Castlemilk.

Last month, new statistics revealed that sex crimes in Scotland are at their highest level in 55 years.

Scotland’s chief statistician released data about recorded crime showing that between 2024-25 and 2025-26, sex crimes are now at the highest level seen since 1971.

Overall recorded crime rose by 5% in 2025-26 to stand at 313,357 – the highest level since 2014-15 – with those figures including a total of 16,430 sexual offences.
