A man has been arrested in Dumfries and Galloway after three puppies died and dozens more were abandoned in Cumbria.

Police said a 25-year-old man from Brampton was arrested in Canonbie on Monday, January 27 and a search carried out an address in the village.

Three batches of puppies were abandoned in Cumbria in December and three did not survive.

More than 20 puppies received treatment and have been rehomed.

The 25-year-old was arrested on suspicion of three incidents of causing unnecessary suffering to protected animals.

He was released under investigation while enquiries continue.

A Cumbria Police statement read: “A man has been arrested following three batches of puppies being deposited in north Cumbria in December.

“The man, 25, of the Brampton area, was arrested in Canonbie, Dumfries and Galloway, by Cumbria’s dedicated Rural Crime Team, with the support of the force’s north Tactical Support Group and Dog Unit.

“A search was also carried out at an address in Canonbie.

“The man was arrested on suspicion of three incidents of causing unnecessary suffering to protected animals.

“Three batches of puppies were deposited in Cumbria in December.

“Officers have been working with colleagues at Cumberland Council. While, sadly, three of the puppies did not survive, more than 20 have received treatment and been rehomed.

“The man was released under investigation while enquiries continue. The arrest was made on Monday.”
