Man charged after 'crucifix set alight and 40 headstones damaged' at cemetery

A number of acts of vandalism were reportedly carried out at St Conval’s cemetery in the early hours of Saturday.

A man has been charged after a wooden crucifix was allegedly set alight and 40 headstones damaged at an East Renfrewshire cemetery.

A number of acts of vandalism were reportedly carried out at St Conval’s cemetery on Glasgow Road in Barrhead in the early hours of Saturday.

The Diocese of Paisley said around 40 headstones were attacked, some of which were demolished, and a five-metre wooden crucifix was set on fire.

Bishop John Keenan said he was “dismayed by the senseless vandalism and the destructive violence behind it”.

He added: “My thoughts and prayers are with the families who have had headstones attacked, as well as with the whole community of relatives and friends who visit St Conval’s and care for the graves of their loved ones so tenderly.

“My gratitude goes to the St. Conval’s staff who maintain the grounds and administer the cemetery and who now face the distressing task of repairing and making safe damaged graves while comforting distraught families.”

Police confirmed on Monday that a 39-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with wilful fire-raising and vandalism.

He is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
