A man has been charged over a double-decker bus crash that injured eight people, including schoolchildren, after a railway bridge tore off its roof.
Emergency services were called to the collision on Culzean Crescent, in Kilmarnock, in East Ayrshire, at around 2pm on Thursday, December 19.
Stagecoach confirmed that eight people were taken to University Hospital Crosshouse after the number 6 service, which runs from Kilmarnock Bus Station to New Farm Loch, struck a low bridge.
There were no serious injuries.
Police confirmed on Monday that a 34-year-old man had been charged in connection with a road traffic offence following the crash.
Officers said a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
A 15-year-old schoolboy, who was on the top deck of the vehicle, described how he felt the bus was going “quite fast” as it turned a corner and approached the low-level railway bridge.
The teenager said the bus “took a different turn than usual” before he saw the bridge come into view.
He told STV News: “Any person would know we wouldn’t fit under it. People on the bus were prepared, and it seemed everyone knew what was going to happen.”
The incident comes after a double-decker bus crashed into a railway bridge in Glasgow on Saturday, December 14.
Five were taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment, with one person in a critical condition.
