A man has been charged after a police officer was threatened with a knife in Glasgow city centre.

The incident happened at around 12.40pm on Tuesday, August 4, at a store on Buchanan Street.

An officer from the Retail Crime Taskforce was in the premises investigating a recent spate of shoplifting incidents when the assault took place.

A 32-year-old man was subsequently traced in the city centre the next day.

He has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on August 6.

Chief Inspector Stephen McManus said: “Thankfully the officer was not injured during this incident but let me be absolutely clear – this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“I would like to take this opportunity to commend the professionalism and bravery of the officer involved.

“We will continue to have dedicated patrols within Glasgow city centre to deter and detect criminality and would encourage anyone with information or concerns to approach our officers or call 101.”
