Man charged with assaulting police officer during Old Firm disorder

Two men have been charged as part of an investigation into disorder at an Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

Fans clashed on the field after Celtic knocked Rangers out of the Scottish Cup on penalties on March 8.

Dozens of Celtic fans ran onto the pitch in celebration, followed by hundreds of Rangers fans who were able to breach the stewards.

Police have made a number of arrests following the violence, which saw officers, supporters, members of coaching staff, and players assaulted.

A ten-year-old child was also struck by a coin as items, including pyrotechnics, were thrown by supporters.

A 27-year-old man has now been charged in connection with offences including breach of the peace, possessing an offensive weapon, and assaulting a police officer.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with an assault.

Both men have been released on an undertaking to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.

Detective chief inspector David Lamont said: “Extensive enquiries are ongoing to identify and trace those involved in the scenes which took place at the conclusion of the match on Sunday, March 8.

“A team of officers continue to carry out enquiries and examine a large amount of CCTV images and footage to identify and trace those involved, further arrests will be made.”

Following the disorder, Rangers said they agreed that a full independent review into the events surrounding the match should be conducted.

The Ibrox side warned of sanctions, potential withdrawal of ticketing privileges and stadium bans should individuals be identified and convicted of offences connected to the match.

Celtic’s interim chairman, Brian Wilson, said the club would “work closely” with Police Scotland and said concerns about access arrangements prior to the game would be addressed with officers, the SFA and Rangers.
