A man has died and another remains in a serious condition following a two-car crash on a road in Inverclyde.
The 59-year-old driver of a Toyota Yaris was rushed to hospital in Glasgow from the A78 between Inverkip and Wemyss Bay following reports of a collision with another vehicle on Saturday night.
He later passed away at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where a 22-year-old man, who was driving a Volkswagen Golf, remains under close observation.
The road was closed for almost 12 hours following the incident but reopened shortly before 9am on Sunday morning.
An investigation into the crash remains at an early stage and a report is to be sent to the procurator fiscal.
No one else was understood to be injured in the incident.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.25 pm on Saturday, October 15, police were called to a serious road crash involving a Toyota Yaris and VW Golf on the A78 near Inverkip.
“The 59-year-old male driver of the Toyota Yaris was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he has since died. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
“The 22-year-old man, the driver of the VW Golf, remains for treatment at the same hospital where medical staff describe his condition as serious.”
They added: “There were no other passengers in either car.
“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
“The road was re-opened around 9am.”
