TRNSMT via SuppliedA man injured a 16-year-old girl after residue from his lit flare hit her in the eye at TRNSMT.
Calvin Devaney, 23, sparked the pyrotechnic at the Glasgow Green music festival on July 13, 2025.
Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how Devaney initially climbed onto another person’s shoulders while an artist performed on stage.
Devaney was seen to wear sunglasses, a bucket hat and had a green flag wrapped around him.
Prosecutor Bobby Ray said: “He lit off a red flare within the crowd. Part of the residue of the flare landed on the left eye of the 16-year-old girl.
“She felt immediate pain and was unable to open her eye.”
The girl went to a steward and she was taken away for treatment.
Her eye was washed out and checked for redness and swelling.
Security was able to trace Devaney and he was arrested.
Devaney pleaded guilty to culpable and reckless conduct to the girl’s injury.
James Arrol, defending, told Thursday’s sentencing: “The girl’s injuries are thankfully not long-lasting.
“My client accepts that and understands it would have been a frightening experience for her and caused her difficulties.”
Sheriff Andrew McIntyre ordered Devaney to pay the girl £500 in compensation and to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.
The sheriff said: “This was not minor. Going to these events and setting off a flare is serious and one reason why people don’t want to go or their own children going.
“These places need to be safe to enjoy.”
