A man has appeared in court after a “suspect item” had to be exploded by the Royal Navy bomb squad in Clydebank.

Chris Gates appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Wednesday following the incident on Overtoun Court on Monday afternoon.

The 26-year-old from Clydebank was charged with being illegally in possession of, or purchasing or acquiring, ammunition.

Gates made no plea and was remanded in custody pending further examination. He is due to appear before court again within eight days.

Police discovered a suspect item while searching a flat on the street in connection with an ongoing investigation into a man’s unexplained death nearby. There is no connection between the two incidents.

Several homes in the area were evacuated, and train services running through Dalmuir Station were cancelled.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were called to the scene to destroy the device safely.
