A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a police officer in a “hit-and-run” in Dumfries.

Officers were called to assist a member of the public on Herries Avenue at around 12.10am on July 28 before a silver Subaru Forester car was allegedly driven at a male officer at around 1.20am.

He was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The car was discovered abandoned near Catherine Field Road.

Martin McGroary appeared at Dumfries Sheriff Court in connection with the incident on Thursday.

The 26-year-old from Dumfries was charged with assault to severe injury, danger to life, attempted murder, road traffic offences and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He made no plea and was remanded in custody to appear again at court within the next eight days.
