Man in hospital after van impaled by falling tree during Storm Eowyn emergency call-out

A man has suffered a head injury after his work van became impaled by a fallen tree in Glasgow.

The City Building worker was responding to an emergency callout during a Met Office amber warning on Friday morning amid Storm Eowyn when the tree punctured the windshield of his vehicle.

Police were called to Balmore Road at around 9.05am after the incident and the driver was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital by ambulance, where he remains.

A City Building spokesperson said: “We can confirm a staff member was injured while responding to an emergency callout earlier this morning (January 24).

Met Office amber and yellow warnings remain in place into Saturday.

“Our colleague is currently being treated in hospital. Our team remains in contact with him and is providing any support required.

“We continue to ask for the support of our customers to consider current conditions and to request assistance only in genuine life and limb emergency situations.

“All other repairs have been suspended until the weather situation improves. We would like to thank our customers for their patience during this very challenging time.”

It comes as the country faces hurricane-force winds.

A rare red weather warning came into force at 10am on Friday and remained active until 5pm.

Police Scotland and the Scottish Government urged the public not to travel in areas where the warning was in place.

They warned that debris is likely to remain on the roads for “some time” and asked drivers to use caution when it is safe to return to the roads.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.05am on Friday, January 24, 2025. we were called to Balmore Road, Glasgow following a report that a tree had fallen on a van.

“The driver was treated by ambulance staff and the vehicle was recovered.”
