Man jailed for threatening police officer with knife in Glasgow city centre shop

A man has been jailed after he threatened a police officer with a knife in a Glasgow city centre shop.

The officer from Police Scotland’s Retail Crime Taskforce was carry out enquiries within the premises regarding a number of shoplifting incidents when Daniel Burknap targeted him.

The 32-year-old threw an object at the officer and threatened him with a knife before fleeing the scene.

Burknap was traced the following day in the city centre and arrested.

He pled guilty to assaulting a police officer and breach of the peace offences at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

Burknap was sentenced to nine months behind bars.

Chief inspector Stephen McManus said: “Violence and abusive behaviour is not part of the job for our officers – these are criminal offences and will not be tolerated.

“I would like to take this opportunity to commend the professionalism and bravery of the officer involved.

“We will continue to have dedicated patrols within Glasgow City Centre to deter and detect criminality and would encourage anyone with information or concerns to approach our officers or call 101.”
