A man who set fire to a car was caught after he left his shoe behind at the scene.

Thomas Campbell, also known as Thomas Stillie, 20, torched the Audi A5 in Glasgow’s Barlanark on March 28 2023.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that Campbell started the fire on the sports car around 9pm.

The blaze was later extinguished by firefighters and the car was later written off.

It was deemed that the fire was “wilful” as there was traces of accelerant that was used.

Prosecutor Victoria Keel said: “A Nike Air Max trainer and a fuel cannister was found close to the fire.

“Campbell’s DNA was present on the trainer and his fingerprints were found on the fuel cannister.

“Campbell was traced to his home where he was arrested.”

It was stated that the victim’s insurance paid out £10,000 which went to a new car however his insurance premiums have risen.

Campbell, of the city’s Easterhouse, pled guilty to wilful fire raising.

The matter was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff Iain Fleming who granted him bail.

The sheriff said: “Don’t misunderstand the position, these are serious matters.”
