All lines at Glasgow Queen Street were closed after a person was hit by a train on Tuesday evening.
Emergency services were called to Lenzie Station where the casualty was reported on the tracks shortly before 7pm.
The person was pronounced dead at the scene. No further details have been confirmed.
Trains to and from Edinburgh, Stirling, Alloa, Perth, Dundee, Inverness and Aberdeen were all affected amid the incident on the line between Glasgow and Croy.
There was major disruption for hours as ScotRail organised alternative travel with bus companies.
Shortly before 9pm, ScotRail announced there would be a coach running to Aberdeen from Stirling to replace the 9.40pm service from Queen Street.
Passengers travelling to Aberdeen from Edinburgh were asked to take the 10pm Edinburgh to Dundee where a Capercaillie minibus will run from Dundee to Aberdeen.
Disruption continued late into the evening.
A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to Lenzie railway station at 18.51pm on March 7 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
