The 15-year-old’s body is due to be flown back to Ethiopia where a funeral will take place.

Kingsway Community Connections youth worker Lainy Bedingfield said: “I wouldn’t say this is closure but the community has been mourning since Amen died.

“Today it is important for the boys to be able to say goodbye to him and to be here with other people who feel the same as they do.”

The service was conducted by St Arsema Ethiopian church which holds weekly Sunday services in the building.

A priest from St Mary’s Eritrean Orthodox church, who participated in the vigil in Clarendon Street last month, led the prayers.

Jamie O’Neill from Kingsway Community Connections told the congregation: “In the last few weeks, I have gotten to know many of the faces in this room, and I knew Amen for three or four years.

“It is our duty now to see you returned to your mum and dad.

“He was a boy who lit up the room when he walked in. He was cool; he was laid back. The other day, I went to the football pitch where Amen played, and I spoke to him there.

“I was thinking of all the memories that we shared, that his friends have shared, and I feel that energy you had, the love you had for life, will stay with each one of us.

“I would urge people when they think of Amen to think of his smile and to the young people who looked up to him, you can still look up to him. Every time I think of Amen, I am going to think of love, peace and compassion.“

Three teenagers, aged 14, 15 and 16, have appeared at Glasgow Sheriff court charged in connection with the incident. Two are facing charges of murder whilst the 15-year-old was charged with assault

All three have made no plea. The 14 and 16-year-old were remanded in custody.
