A motorcyclist has died following an early morning crash which closed a road in North Ayrshire for more than six hours.

The B714 was closed for around four miles from the Kilwinning Road roundabout in Dalry to the Sharphill roundabout at Saltcoats after the crash at 6.40am on Thursday, which involved a Honda VT750 motorbike and a white Mercedes Benz Sprinter dropside lorry.

Emergency services attended and the motorbike rider, a 71-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been made aware

The road was closed for crash investigation work and re-opened around 1pm.

Anyone with information about the crash has been asked to contact Police Scotland.

Sergeant Brian Simpson said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died and his family has asked for privacy at what is a very difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.

“If you were driving in the area at the time please check any dash-cam footage you have to see if something that could assist with our investigation has been captured.”
