Mountain rescue teams have joined the search for a man who disappeared on a hillwalk.

George Smith travelled from Stranraer to Tarbet on Monday to go hillwalking in the Cruach Tairbeit and Glen Loin areas.

The 64-year-old has not been in contact since, and his car was found parked in Tarbet off the A83.

George is also known to travel to the Glasgow area.

He is described as white, around 5ft 8ins and of medium build with greying, red hair. He was wearing a red and black jacket.

Inspector Bart Simonis said: “It is completely out of character for George not to keep in regular contact with his family, and he has not returned home. His car was found parked in Tarbet off the A83.

“We believe he headed for Cruach Tairbeit and Glen Loin. Extensive searches are being carried out in these areas with officers being assisted by mountain rescue teams and specialist search advisors.

“If you have seen George since Monday, February 23, or have any information that may assist our investigation, please contact Police Scotland through 101 quoting incident number 2630 of February 25, 2026.”
