Mum jailed after attacking pensioner with beer bottle

A mum-of-one has been jailed for three years after attacking a pensioner with a broken beer bottle in his home.

The 35-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, shouted “rapist” at the 76-year-old man before striking him twice on the head with the weapon.

The OAP, who also cannot be named for legal reasons, suffered damage to his left jugular vein and neck tissue and had to undergo surgery.

At the High Court in Glasgow, the woman admitted assault to the danger of the pensioner’s life at his Glasgow home in August 2019.

Judge Lord Mulholland told the woman: “You assaulted your victim with a broken bottle after climbing up a drainpipe and then assaulting him at his front door.

“It is said the motive was you were touched inappropriately when you were younger.

“You genuinely believed he had touched you. That is for another court.

“Vigilantism has no place in a civilised society.”

The court heard there was an on-going investigation into allegations the accused made about being sexually abused by the victim.

Defence counsel Louise Arrol said: “The allegation was made to family and social workers prior to this offence being committed.

“Her childhood can be described as chaotic. She now accepts she can’t carry out vigilante behaviour.

“She says she suffered at the hands of the complainer.”

Prosecutor Greg Farrell said: “Police inquiries are ongoing into this woman’s allegation that the complainer committed serious offences against her when she was a child.

“These are the subject a live and ongoing police investigation.”

The court heard that the pensioner was at home alone watching television around 10.30pm when he noticed someone climbing up the drainpipe outside the window behind the television.

He opened the window and shouted at the accused who jumped down from the drainpipe.

He then opened his front door to the accused, who he told police he did not recognise.

The woman, who was drunk, shouted “rapist” at him and struck him twice on the head with the neck of a broken beer bottle.

He pushed her away and locked the door before returning to his living room and realised he was bleeding.

The pensioner activated a panic alarm and an ambulance was called.

Meanwhile, the accused went to a friend’s house and said: “I’ve done something stupid. I think he’s dead. He molested me.”

The woman was sentenced via a video link from prison.
