A school child has died following a crash in a village in Ayrshire.
The child, who has not yet been named, was killed following the collision on the A76 in the Castle area of New Cumnock shortly after noon on Monday.
The road remained closed at 7.30pm in the wake of the crash while an initial investigation was ongoing.
Tributes have been left on social media, with a number of local clubs and organisations cancelling events this week.
Cumnock Juniors Girls Football Club said all training had been cancelled.
The New Cumnock Development Trust (NCDT) said: “In light of the tragic event in our community today, all NCDT activities over the coming week are now cancelled.”
Linda McAulay Griffiths, chief education officer at East Ayrshire Council said: “Our thoughts are with all involved at this very sad time.
“We will be working closely with the school and together we will do all we can to help and support those affected in the coming days.
“All enquiries relating to the incident itself are being handled by our colleagues in Police Scotland.”
New Cumnock is a village in East Ayrshire, around 21 miles east of Ayr and 35 miles north of Dumfries.
The A76 is the main route that runs through the village from Kilmarnock to Dumfries.
Early on Monday afternoon police said they were responding to a “severe incident”.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers are investigating a fatal road crash involving a pedestrian which happened around 12.35pm on Monday, September 18, on Castle Place, New Cumnock.
“The road remains closed.”
