A health board has urged people to stay away from A&E as Covid patient numbers hit record levels.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde issued the warning on Tuesday evening as 2221 people were reported to be in hospital having tested positive for Covid-19.

Of that number, 29 people were in intensive care and a further 37 people died having tested positive for the virus.

People have been asked not to attend A&E as a result unless their condition is urgent or life-threatening and to instead contact NHS24 on 111 for advice.

Dr Scott Davidson, deputy medical director, said: “Our hospitals are near capacity and Covid pressures remain.

“Our staff are doing everything to help patients, but to support them, please only attend our sites if your condition is very urgent.”
