More than 50 jobs are at risk at a care home in Inverclyde, which is facing closure after nearly a century.

Glenfield Care Home in Greenock provides person-centred nursing care for up to 33 residents in small group living environments.

The home is run by the Greenock Medical Aid Society (GMAS), which purchased the site on Bedford Street in 1926.

GMAS, a charity founded in 1798, also runs the Bagatelle Care Home in the town.

However, the owners say that, following consultation after a “period of heavy weekly losses,” the home needed to be closed.

Shutting down could mean the loss of as many as 54 jobs.

GMAS cited increases to employer National Insurance contributions and National Care Home Contract rates as reasons.

The business said rising costs and sector-wide challenges made it “impossible for us to continue to operate” the facility.

A GMAS spokesperson said: “It is with great sadness that we need to make the very difficult decision to potentially close this home.

“This is an extremely difficult time for our residents, their families and our staff.

“GMAS will do everything possible to save as many of the 54 jobs now at risk of redundancy and ensure our residents continuity of care.

“We will work closely with all those affected and with our statutory partners, Inverclyde HSCP, other Local Authorities and the Care Inspectorate.

“This potential decision is to ensure that GMAS remains at the forefront of providing high quality care at Bagatelle in the future, as we have done for the past 227 years.”
