A dog owner says she has been left “traumatised” after her pet died following an attack by two other dogs in East Ayrshire.

Police received reports of a dog being attacked by a pair of dogs near Craigens Road in Cumnock on Sunday, December 29.

The dog, named Poppy, was taken to a vet in Kilmarnock but died from its injuries.

Police said a 37-year-old man has now been charged in connection with the incident and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Poppy’s owner, Mary Murray, said she is “heartbroken” to have lost her pet.

She told STV News: “This has been an extremely traumatic incident that I will never forget.

“I am very grateful to the members of the community that stopped to offer assistance, and to MBM Vets in Kilmarnock who tried in vein to save Poppy.

“They showed such compassion and kindness towards me.

“I’m heartbroken losing Poppy and sincerely hope no one else has to experience this type of tragedy.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Sunday, December 29, 2024, we received reports of a dog attacked by two other dogs near Craigens Road, Cumnock.

“One dog was taken to the vets but died from its injuries.

“One man, aged 37, has been charged in connection, and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
